Balsa trees are native to Brazil. Balsa wood weighs only half as much as cork. The balsa tree, grows quickly, reaching a height of 21 metres in only seven years. Balsa wood was used for building rafts, and making drawing equipments.Balsa is kiln-dried to produce a light-weight and high strength-to-weight ratio wood. Balsa cuts easily with a hobby knife and can be stained or painted to represent and wood type. It is the premier wood for modeling.
